Obituary

Cynthia S. Watts “Cindy”, 65, of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving husband Bob and daughter Lexie, on Sunday, August 27th, 2023 after a short but incredibly fierce battle with breast cancer.

Cindy was born on December 6, 1957, in Coatesville, PA to the late Walter and Helen Sushinski (Giannaris). Born and raised in Coatesville, Cindy attended Coatesville High School and later went on to attend Shippensburg and Immaculata University. After college, Cindy began working at Allen-Sherman-Hoff (ASH) where she met her husband Bob in 1980. Some people are swept off their feet by love, but Cindy was knocked off her feet…by a foul ball Bob hit in an after-work softball game. The two soon began dating and were married on May 27, 1984.

Later on, Cindy worked at Citadel Federal Credit Union until her first and only daughter Lexie was born- her “miracle baby” and light of her life.  She was very well known for her hospitality – she hosted many events for Lexie’s “playgroup”, was president of the Home and School Board at Pope John Paul II Regional Elementary, and spent countless hours volunteering in other ways at the school. Cindy loved serving others and volunteering her time, but undoubtedly found the most fulfillment in being both a mom and friend to Lexie.

Cindy was also the face of the Elverson Deli, and enjoyed getting to know each and every person who walked through the door. Most recently, she was a paraprofessional and an administrative assistant at Pequea Valley Intermediate School. She found great joy in being with the students and helping her colleagues (that turned into dear friends) in any way she could. Last year she even received the “Staff Person of the Year” Award in recognition of her dedication, hard work, and service to the school, even while undergoing treatment.

Cindy was incredibly proud of her Greek heritage. Out of all the amazing Greek foods she made, she was most known for her famous baklava. She grew up attending Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Lancaster, PA, and she traveled to Greece many times throughout her life. Once Lexie was old enough to attend Sunday school, the Watts family began attending St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Jeffersonville, PA. Cindy taught Sunday school, helped out with the Greek dance group, and worked the church festivals. Her faith was always a source of great comfort, especially during the last year of her life.

Although Cindy rarely took time for herself, in her free time she loved to visit local produce farms and markets, catch up with friends, watch Hallmark and Judge Judy, snuggle her beloved cockapoos Casey and Cody, and play Ruzzle on her phone (“to keep her mind sharp”). You could always spot Cindy in a crowd wearing an outfit consisting of her signature color: pink. She was constantly reminding those around her to try and “find the good” in any situation and was a perfect example of just how to do that.

Cindy leaves behind many people who loved her greatly, including her husband Robert J. “Bob” and daughter Alexandra Katherine “Lexie” (26) as well as aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends who grew to be family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Helen Sushinski, and her brother V. Michael “Val” Sushinski.

“As I lay me down to sleep, this I pray: that you will hold me dear, though I’m far away. I’ll whisper your name into the sky, and I will wake up happy.” Cindy will be missed and loved forever, but we will keep smiling as we promised her that we would, and know that we will see her “when the sun comes out again.”

Family and friends are invited to her Visitation Tuesday, September 5th from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 900 S. Trooper Road, Jeffersonville, PA 19403 followed by her Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Coatesville.
