Dr. Norman Makous (born July 22, 1924), of Coatesville, PA passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021. Preceded in death by Dorothy, his first wife of fifty-four years, and by Eleanor, his second wife of twelve years.
Survived by his beloved partner, Adrianne, and by his brother, Walter. Also survived by his loving children and their spouses –David, Bruce and Bobbie, Kitty Davis, Monte and Tertia, Joe and Lisa, Martin, John, Ginnie, Doll and Steve Lank, and Meg and Kurt Hummel. Dr. Makous also leaves behind nineteen loving grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Dr. Makous was born in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in medicine in 1947. After completing his medical training in Missouri, and serving briefly in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Makous established a respected cardiology practice in Philadelphia, where he worked tirelessly for his patients for sixty years. At the same time, Dr. Makous served on the faculties of the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University medical schools, as well as on a number of medical advisory boards and community organizations. His dedication to the field of cardiology has been recognized by the American Heart Association and other professional organizations.
Since 1998, Dr. Makous has been an enthusiastic and involved resident of the retirement community of Freedom Village, in Coatesville, PA, where he played tennis, bridge, and bocce.
Loved by all who knew him, Dr. Makous will be greatly missed. Due to the pandemic, an in-person memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
