Ellis Stern Jr Obituary

Ellis E. Stern, Jr., 92, died Thursday, November 24, 2016 at his home in Wilmington, DE.
He was the husband of Madelyn Toadvine Stern with whom he shared 24 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen Dulaney Stern who died in 1990.
Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Ellis E. Stern, Sr. and Anna M. Pennegar Stern.
Ellis left Grove City College during his freshman year to enlist in the U.S. Army. He served in the 13th Airborne Division during World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and executing numerous parachute jumps in the European Theater.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Ellis graduated from Dickinson College; where he was the Senior Class President, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and was inducted into The Raven's Claw.
He began his career as a banker at Wilmington Trust Company in Wilmington, DE, and in 1958 moved with his family back to Coatesville to join his father at the National Bank of Coatesville. Ellis retired as Vice President of Meridian Bank in Parkesburg in 1989. He was a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.
Ellis was a member of the Coatesville Rotary Club where he served as past president and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He also was a member of the Brandywine Goddard Lodge #383 F. & A.M., the Rajah Temple, Sons of the American Revolution and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Throughout his career, Ellis focused a great deal of attention on public service. He served on the Caln Township Planning Commission and the Chester County Planning Commission. He was a member of the Board of Chester County Water Resources Authority, Coatesville Country Club, Handi-Crafters, Coatesville Hospital, Fairview Cemetery and was chairman of the Selective Service Board. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Coatesville, where he participated in the choir and served as a Warden, as well as being on the Vestry.
As a banker, Ellis served as the Chester County Bankers Association Chairman and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association Group 2 Chairman.
He enjoyed sports of all kinds, particularly tennis and golf, but his true joy was spending time with his family.
Surviving him, in addition to his wife, Madelyn, are his daughters, Alison S. Wood (Lee Bergan) and Anne (Cinde) Tilley (Douglas) and four grandchildren, Christopher (Ashley), Ryan (Megan Hudson), Michael and Jessica Tilley. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Wesley, Harvey and Lynda Reed.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Episcopal Church of the Trinity, 323 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville. Relatives and friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 323 E. Lincoln Hwy, Coatesville, PA 19320.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville.
