Joy Luff Stoughton, 86, of Newtown Square, formerly of the Coatesville area, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Dunwoody Village Retirement Community.
Joy was born October 28, 1938 in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania to Robert and Josephine Luff. Joy’s early years included moves to a number of different towns in Pennsylvania and New York State. She spent most of her early years in Media, Pennsylvania during which time her mother, Josephine, became the first woman to become an officer of First Pennsylvania Bank in Philadelphia. Joy attended the University of Pennsylvania and later started her career in banking spending summers working as a teller at Provident Bank.
Later, Joy worked as membership secretary at Aronimink Golf Club and it was around this time she met her future husband, Richard Stoughton. They married April 30th 1966 and had a son, David, who was born in Berlin, Germany while she was accompanying Richard as he served in the US Army. Following Richard’s military service, the family settled in Paoli, Pennsylvania and then later in East Fallowfield where they became members of the Our Lady of Rosary Roman Catholic parish community.
While raising her son, Joy remained active in both work and volunteer activities; she served for six years as program head for Interstudy, a company that helped place exchange students in area homes. She later rejoined the banking industry, graduated from the Bucknell University School of Banking and progressed through increasingly senior roles at several banks as mergers took place over the years. She ultimately spent 35 years supporting her family and serving the needs of the banks’ customers in Southeastern PA, mainly in the West Chester area. During her career Joy especially enjoyed working with small business owners in the area helping them meet their financial goals. She retired from Wells Fargo as a Regional Vice President of Branch Banking for Chester and Delaware counties.
Throughout her life, Joy remained active in the church community at Our Lady of the Rosary and supported Richard as he became an ordained Deacon of the Catholic Church. Upon Richard’s passing in 2015, Joy soon moved to Dunwoody Village retirement community where she continued to be active in a variety of volunteer programs; always willing to give of her time and loving spirit.
Joy is survived in love and warm memories by her son David and daughter-in-law, Marie, two grandchildren and eight dear cousins.
