Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Skerchock Obituary

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (O'Leary) Skerchock, 101 years of age, of Coatesville passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, surrounded in love.

Born in Norristown and raised in Coatesville, she was the daughter of the late Katherine (Mowday) O'Leary and Arthur O'Leary Sr.

A graduate of the Class of 1942 from S. Horace Scott Senior High School, Betty was a vibrant spirit amongst her peers, serving as Class Secretary and an integral member of their Reunion Committee for decades. After high school, Betty worked as a secretary for Lukens Steel. In her free time, she and her best friend, Ann Garnett (Manotti), sang with the All Girls Chorus, entertaining WWII troops around the region. It wasn't until she spotted a shy yet ever so handsome young man leaning against his car outside of Sante's soda shop that she knew she had found her other half, George Skerchock.

Betty and George dated before George enlisted for WWII. They were married on May 1, 1948 at the famous Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. They shared 58 years of marriage until his death in 2006.  Betty and her husband were founding members of Coatesville's Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.  Betty remained connected with the church her whole life. She was a member of two ladies card clubs, often hosting her girlfriends for an afternoon card game and luncheon.  Later in life she was an involved member of Senior Circle.  She was also a volunteer at Brandywine Hospital for many years. Betty enjoyed all sports and in particular was an avid PSU football fan.  She was a PSU season ticket holder for the majority of her life and rarely missed a game, in-person or on TV.

Betty was devoted to and loved by her family.  She had many friends who loved her dearly.

Betty is survived by her son, John A. Skerchock (Stephanie) and by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Samantha (Eamon and Arthur) and Grant.  Also surviving Betty are several nieces and nephews, as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews.  Betty was pre-deceased by her son, Mark D. Skerchock and her brothers, Arthur J. O’Leary, Jr. and David O’Leary (Mae).
