Susan Jacowitz Obituary

Susan Jacowitz, 78, of Downingtown, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2023 at the Simpson Meadows Retirement Community.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Jean Malamut Berse.  She moved to East Brunswick, New Jersey in 1977, then to the Shannondell Retirement Community in Audubon, Pennsylvania in 2015, and eventually to Simpson Meadows in Downingtown where she resided since May 2022.

She graduated from Midwood High School at 16, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College at 20. She was a teacher for a short time before her daughters were born. After raising them, she went back to school, taking classes in accounting. She passed all four parts of her CPA exam on the first try. She worked as a bookkeeper, CPA, and eventually became a controller for an ambulance company. She retired at the age of 70.

She loved to read, go to Broadway shows, and also enjoyed many activities including dancing, hiking, and Zumba. She was a friend to everyone she met.

Nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her family. She hosted many large family holiday events, especially Passover seders. She was famous for her meatloaf and sweet and sour meatballs, which no one in the family has quite yet figured out how to make them as good as she did.

There were many wonderful trips with her husband and children over the years, eventually joined by extended family, including her beloved grandchildren later in life. The trips took her to many countries around the world, but Disney World was the most popular destination over the years.

Susan is survived by her two daughters, Linda Jacowitz and her husband Mark Kenney, and Karen Jacowitz and her husband Matt Craig, along with five grandchildren, Michelle and Lauren Kenney and Brian, Rachel and Emma Craig. She is also survived by her three sisters Carole Berse, Audrey (Mel, deceased) Baron, and Sharon (Paul) Chropuvka, and her brother Mark (Jenny) Berse. She was predeceased by her husband Allen Jacowitz, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her brother, Marvin (Phyllis) Berse, and her sister-in-law Claire (Sidney) Tishfield.
