Sylvia Clark Halpern, 89, a wife, mother, grandmother and civic volunteer died peacefully Thursday, June 8, 2017.
Known to all who loved her as Cissie, she was born in Conshohocken, PA and raised in Lebanon, PA.
The daughter of the late Samuel and Esther Clark, she was a 1946 graduate of Lebanon High School.
She was the beloved wife of the late William Halpern, a founder of radio station WCOJ-AM and Cable TV of Chester County. They shared 57 years of marriage.
She is survived by a daughter, Lesley Stein (Carl) of Carmichael, CA; a son, Edward Halpern (Mary) of Middletown, PA; a daughter-in-law, Francine Halpern of Clearwater, FL; and a grandson, Eric Halpern of Wilmington, DC. A son, Jonathan Halpern in 1995, preceded her in death.
Cissie was a resident of Coatesville for 44 years before moving to West Chester. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Brandywine Hospital and served as co-chairperson of the Hospital's annual Dinner Dance. Additionally, she volunteered at the Brandywine Hospital Gift Shop and was past president of Brandywine Home Health Agency, serving on its board for many years. She was also on the Chester County Advisory Committee for Children's Services; and took an active role as a volunteer, teaching children to read.
A member of Beth Israel Congregation of Chester County for over 60 years, Cissie was a past president of the Beth Israel Sisterhood and chaired the Judaica Shop. A founder and co-chair of the Beth Israel Lecture Series, she also served on numerous Synagogue committees and was a member of Hadassah.
She was an accomplished knitter and enjoyed traveling the world as well as playing Mah Jongg and canasta.
Funeral services will be held at Beth Israel Congregation of Chester County, 385 Pottstown Pike, Eagle, PA at 10 a.m., Sunday, June 11, 2017. Interment will be at Beth Israel Cemetery, Coatesville, PA. Shiva is scheduled for Sunday and Monday at 7 p.m. at Cissie's home.
