Walter Hart West, III, known to friends and family as Terry, died in Philadelphia, PA on June 14, 2025. He was 89 years old. Terry was born in Chestnut Hill, PA, on January 27, 1936, and attended primary schools in the area. He attended boarding school at Westminster School, in Simsbury, CT, graduating in 1953, and then won an English Speaking Union Scholarship for a post graduate year at Oakham School in Rutland, England.
Terry graduated from Yale University in 1958, where both his father and grandfather were graduates. Among other activities he was a member of the Whiffenpoofs, the storied singing group. He remained in touch with the Whiffenpoofs and actively participated in reunions over the years. Terry enjoyed his daily crossword puzzles, looked forward to seeing the latest films and gathering together with friends and family.
He had a kind and charming manner accompanied by a great deal of wit and humor and an encyclopedic knowledge.
Terry is survived by his loving Partner of 53 years, Mildred T. Naskret, his sister Janet West Lloyd, his brother-in-law Wingate Lloyd, his nieces Nina W. Lloyd, Janet S. Lloyd, Helen H. W. Lloyd, his nephew George W. Lloyd, and by his Naskret family members: Bernard Naskret, Janet Olik, Michael Olik, Andrew Olik and his wife Justine; and by many cousins and relatives. He was loved and will be greatly missed by all.
A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. Burial will be private.
